Designed for professionals seeking to enhance their HSE expertise, this 2 days (16 hours) course offers training skills via classroom delivery, culminating in a recognized certificate of competence in excavation and trenching safety.

Course Overview

Comprehensive construction engineering course covering soil mechanics, trench collapse hazards, protective systems (sloping, benching, shoring, shielding), utility identification, hazardous atmospheres, access/egress requirements, and daily statutory competent-person inspections.

Who Should Attend?

Ground collapse prevention, statutory trench protection, underground utility safety, and plant interface management

Syllabus

Excavation types, fatal hazards, cave-in dynamics, and statutory duties under Minerals Commission L.I. 2182.

Soil classification (Type A, B, C), fissured ground, moisture effects, vibration, and surcharge loads.

Cable avoiding tools (CAT & Genny), utility service drawing verification, and safe hand-digging rules.

Sloping, benching, aluminum hydraulic shoring, trench boxes, and safe ladder access spacing.

Daily inspections, hazardous atmosphere testing, sumps, trench dewatering, and emergency exit routes.

Educational Practice — Not a Formal Assessment This interactive module is an illustrative learning preview designed to reinforce core hazard recognition and control principles. It does not record formal CBT marks, issue qualifications, or authorize personnel to conduct high-risk site operations without verified physical competence.

Operational Hazard Observation:

Required Statutory Control Principle:

Reflective Engineering Question:

Why this matters:
Accessible Text Equivalent: Complete Hazard & Control List (6 Markers)
1 Spoil Pile Placement & Edge Distance (Module 2: Soil Mechanics)
Hazard: Excavated soil placed immediately on trench lip adds massive surcharge load.
Control: Keep spoil piles, loose rock, and excavated materials at least 1.0 metre (preferably 1.5m) back from the edge of the excavation lip.
2 Hydraulic Aluminum Shoring / Trench Box (Module 4: Protective Systems)
Hazard: Engineered aluminum struts and steel shields holding back earth pressure.
Control: Ensure shoring box extends at least 450mm above the surrounding soil level to prevent rolling debris from falling into the trench.
3 Safe Means of Egress (Ladder Placement) (Module 4: Protective Systems)
Hazard: Access ladders in trenches deeper than 1.2 metres (4 feet).
Control: Position ladders within 7.5 metres (25 feet) of lateral travel for all trench workers, extending at least 1.0m above the landing edge.
4 Buried Electrical & Gas Utility Proximity (Module 3: Underground Utilities)
Hazard: Underground cable exposed during mechanical excavator digging.
Control: Cross-check utility drawings. Scan with CAT & Genny. Hand-dig with insulated tools within 0.5 metres of any indicated underground cable.
5 Groundwater Infiltration & Sump Pump (Module 5: Inspections & Dewatering)
Hazard: Water pooling at trench bottom softens soil toe, precipitating cave-in.
Control: Install continuous dewatering pumps in deep sumps. Never allow personnel in excavations with standing water without specialized shoring.
6 Mobile Heavy Plant Exclusion Zone (Module 4: Protective Systems)
Hazard: Dump truck reversing near excavation lip without wheel stops.
Control: Install heavy timber stop-blocks or earth berms at least 2m back from the trench lip. Keep heavy vehicles away unless shoring is engineered for surcharge.

Formative Practice Knowledge Check

Test your operational understanding before advancing. Instant feedback is provided for learning reinforcement.

At what minimum depth does an excavation or trench in Ghana require certified protective systems (shoring, shielding, or sloping) under safe operating practice?

Zero formal grade impact • Pure formative reflection

Under OSHA 1926 Subpart P and Ghanaian construction safety benchmarks, any trench deeper than 1.2m represents a fatal cave-in risk requiring protective shoring.
